Roofing contractors should know their materials inside and out. To fully understand underlayment one must know something about raw materials as well as manufacturing. Subtle variations at the molecular level have large effects on the properties of materials; furthermore, variations on the microscopic and macroscopic scales also affect performance.
There are many similarities between traditional, specialty and synthetic underlayment products. Tarco offers underlayment products in each of these three broad categories, allowing us to offer in-depth, unbiased knowledge about underlayment selection and installation. When it comes to underlayment selection, the needs of our customers come first.
For more about raw materials and manufacturing processes for underlayments, see the white paper “Rethinking Roofing Underlayments,” which is available for download in the Document Library. This lavishly illustrated white paper compares analogous processes for the manufacture of traditional asphalt-coated felts and premium modified bitumen membranes, pointing out the similarities as well as the differences in manufacturing. It also provides a detailed photo essay on manufacture of synthetic underlayment.
