New LeakBarrier SBS Multipurpose Underlayment from Tarco Is Outstanding Alternative to Asphalt-Saturated Felt

Tarco today announced LeakBarrier™ SBS Multipurpose Underlayment, an advanced moisture-barrier membrane that gives additional protection underneath a wide variety of roofing systems.

With an inorganic, fiberglass reinforcement that eliminates the rot and cracking associated with traditional asphalt felt, SBS MultiPurpose Underlayment is a superior alternative to ordinary 15-, 30- and 40-lb. saturated felt. Contractors can install this underlayment underneath composition shingles, shake applications, all types of tile, and metal roofing. It is also especially well suited for use as a base or ply sheet in modified bitumen, asphalt built-up and cold-process roofing systems.

SBS MultiPurpose Underlayment consists of a glass-fiber-reinforced sheet sandwiched between two layers of superior-quality bituminous resins modified with synthetic resins. The coatings are formulated with a premium asphalt compound blended with styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) to produce a membrane that combines the moisture resistance of asphalt with the strength of a synthetic resin.

The sheets are lightweight and easy to handle. The excellent pliability of SBS-modified asphalt facilitates a wrinkle-free, flat-laying sheet. The approximate thickness of the sheets is 55 mils (i.e., 0.055 inches). The product exceeds ASTM D-226 Type I & II standards and meets ASTM D-4869 Four Hour Shower test standards and is available in one-square and two-square rolls.
